Federal Reserve Reduces Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Calendar Year During Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority reduced borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second reduction this year amid financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Decision Comes at Unprecedented Time for Central Bank

The decision to cut the key rate by a 0.25% to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Labor Market Changes

In a statement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement reads. “Inflation has risen and remains moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of important financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve typically studies labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, including the count of new jobs created to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was released in early September, prior to the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.

The number of jobs created to the economy in August was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.

Private Data Indicate Ongoing Decline

Though BLS was scheduled to publish last month’s employment data in early October, it suspended its publication when the shutdown started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the business segment eliminated 32,000 jobs in last month, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head Jerome Powell stated recently, which he had earlier said stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Increase

Though the bureau’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still issued its inflation report for September that showed that costs are rising, albeit gradually. Prices increased three percent over the last year, the highest since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target price increase is 2%.
