In the early hours of Saturday, reports emerged of significant explosions rocking the Iranian capital, following statements from Israel that it had carried out a preemptive military action.
Loud Blasts and Plumes of Smoke Witnessed in Central Tehran
As per eyewitness accounts, two powerful explosions were audible in Tehran on Saturday. Simultaneously, two plumes of thick smoke were observed rising over the centre and east of the city.
“The type of these blasts indicates that this is a missile attack,” one news agency reported, though it did not initially provide additional information.
Context: Rising Tensions and Recent Developments
The incident occurs against a background of sharply increased tensions in the region. Major developments preceding this attack include:
- US Military Buildup: A massive buildup of American warships in the Middle East, featuring the movement of aircraft carriers.
- Diplomatic Negotiations: Recent discussions between the US and Iranian officials on Tehran's atomic program concluded without a deal, with indications of more talks scheduled.
- Public Statements: Before the strike, a senior US official had described Iran as “the leading state sponsor of terrorism” and issued warnings regarding its missile program.
- Ultimatum: Allegedly, a deadline of 10 to 15 days had been given to Iran to resolve the atomic standoff or face severe consequences.
Reaction from Tehran
Reacting to earlier allegations, Iranian authorities had accused the US of spreading “big lies” about its defensive capabilities. Officials rejected claims about weapons development and casualty figures as baseless.
The situation remains fast-moving, with additional reports expected as events unfold.
