Consider this a dare for those in enduring partnerships who appreciate scary movies: Get comfortable with your loved one and stream Together. This independent film success of 2025 just made its streaming debut on the Hulu service. Outwardly, it might appear like typical biological terror, but beneath Together lies a deep contemplation about our choices in loving one another.
An Introductory Film Exploring Relationship Dynamics
Together represents the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for ten years. United in marriage in real life in 2017, the actors contribute a special spark to their portrayals, masterfully depicting both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.
The story begins when Millie and Tim transition from the big city to the countryside for Millie’s job. A somewhat stereotypical story element, admittedly, but that’s largely where the conventions cease. Together evolves into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the couple's dynamic as it is a film about physical terror.
A Supernatural Catalyst
While walking near their country house, a storm hits, and the protagonists fall into an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence begins influencing the pair. This force compels a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding simple connection.
The whole movie is a slow burn fright fest, weaving in moments of hallucinatory nightmares, disturbing (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and genuinely funny exchanges (sometimes during something horrific). The director skillfully blends these components expertly and delivers them in a gradually swelling aura of dread.
Nuanced Portrayals
A significant portion of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his floundering music career inexorably rises.
Conversely, Tim senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and removed from his social circle. He is terrified of the notion of utterly sacrificing his individual identity in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he does not operate a vehicle and relies on Millie for getting around.
The director's cleverest decision is that he refrains from painting one partner or the other the definite antagonist.
The couple face the type of challenges that arise in long-term unions a decade in. Deep down, they have affection for one another. They share moments of joy, comfort one another, and are vulnerable at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable undercurrent of doubt about their bond.
Thematic Depth
While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these concerns of excessive reliance and totally devoting oneself to another person, the metaphor avoids being overly obvious or heavy-handed. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a ideal counterpart to the relationship narrative. Both the supernatural and the personal enhance each other symbiotically.
A Divisive Ending
Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. Reports indicate that unattached audience members have understood the narrative as a strong argument for remaining unattached. On the other hand, certain partners experiencing tension found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.
If you are alone or with a partner, your own response could potentially serve as a telling indicator of how you view relationships. Will the finale sow anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in Tim or Millie and yell at the screen, or simply turn to your partner and say, “I’d do that for you”?
Whatever the case may be, Together is an experiment you can undertake today.
Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu as of this moment.
